Make sure and abide by some set guidelines to ensure your purchasing process nets you the best quality speakers on the market (the speakers you purchase will of course depend on your budget but my advice to you is to squirrel away enough money to buy the best speakers versus settling for second-rate ones).
Numerous kinds of speakers are available to you but look for those that have been given THX certification which indicates a higher quality speaker. These speakers will usually be crystal clear and have next to no distortion. I can not stress enough the importance of finding speakers that are THX certified, assuming that they would not be too expensive for you. The ultimate and ideally final determining factor in your speaker buying process should be how awesome and perfect to you the sound is emanating from the actual speaker.
The reasons that people like and dislike the sound of a particular speaker varies widely including the kind of music being played and how much distortion they hear, but someones horrific distortion could be another persons perfect sounding set of speakers. The bottom line is that each individual has their own set of standards and ways of figuring out what sounds ideal for them and what sounds awful and some people are willing to make some concessions while others will not. Personally I am a self admitted snob of sound and the word concession or sacrifice do not enter into my mind when choosing a speakers.
You can follow a few steps in your purchasing process to make sure you buy speakers that are of high quality and work well for your home system. First off, pay attention to the higher sounds to hear if they are coming off distorted, almost as if the sound was coming from a tin can. Make sure the midrange sounds seem clear, resonant and rich. Listen closely to ensure the subwoofers are not being drowned out and overworked by the speakers because the subwoofer has a particular job to do that the remaining speakers should not be trying to do (if you hear the speaker doing this then there may be a subwoofer issue). Just as valuable is that the speakers mix or blend well together instead of having one overwhelm the rest. Depending on what you are looking for if the sound comes off as too high-pitched and the mid range seems to be taking over the song then consider other speakers.
